WANTED: Block Captains for Neighborhood Watch

"The public observes 20% of crime in progress and reports less than 6% to police"

Help keep crime out of our community by forming a Neighborhood Watch program with your neighbors. Neighborhood Watch involves the joint efforts of the police department and the community to:

• enhance neighborhood security
• heighten the community’s power of observance
• encourage mutual assistance and concern among neighbors

We need "Block Captains" to help implement Neighborhood Watch for the 10 homes surrounding their own. As a Block Captain, you would:

• make an engraver available for marking valuables and provide "Operation Identification" stickers for neighbors to post on their doors and windows
• distribute crime prevention literature
• share information about criminal activity occurring in the community
• notify neighbors of community meetings

Community residents who belong to Neighborhood Watch:

• act as eyes and ears for their neighbors and report suspicious activity to police
• properly secure their homes and upgrade lighting and landscaping if necessary
• check on neighbors' homes when they are out of town
• participate in Operation Identification and the "Watch Your Car" Programs

North White Oak Civic Association provides overall coordination for Neighborhood Watch by:

• Posting crime reports to our website at www.nwhiteoakweb.net
• Keeping close contact with the our Police Beat Team Sergeant
• Working with Montgomery County Community Policing Program to increase police presence in our neighborhood
